poetry from life
Steve Thorp ‘s life is a new poetry pamphlet in a collaboration with artist, Kim Major-George. This well received collection of 22 poems is the latest addition to Steve Thorp’s growing body of work available in pamphlets, poetry boxes and online.
Below you’ll find a selection of poems from life
1 Ageing
Against the backdrop of a withering sky,
We explored senescence
And all that it could prophesy:
Our greying world, our sagging, contoured
Longing, attenuated by the
Faltering insight of our mortality.
I never thought I’d be this age!
In my scarifying face I never saw the
Crumbling crags inexorably weathering,
And at this trembling time we must discover
New ways to adjudicate our worth – to see our
Beauty through another truthful lens or glass.
To compare our aging flesh with youth, or the
Fitness of our body with Olympians
Was always foolish; yet far beyond the
Boundaries of fate may lie acceptance -
Even love of self – if not the admiration
That Narcissus reserved for his mirrored soul!
2 Death of a small child
Like a shaft of sunlight illuminating
dust-motes in the morning,
like a pebble tossed into a pond
rippling through our yearning,
like a piece of joy when her small eye
looked up and was connected,
like the grief we felt when her small soul
was finally collected,
like a flake of snow upon our cheek -
a silent, winter breath caressing -
her tiny spirit gently touched our own,
quietly, inexorably possessing,
leaving us with memories that can
make us smile or cut us like a knife
and, destiny fulfilled, she leaves us:
a short, sweet, bold and simple life.
3 Consummate your life
Consummate your life.
Create the fate that you can love.
Few are left to the world -
the readers of stars and
weavers of dreams.
Inside each one of us is a
sweet nut – oily and delicate -
from which grows enigmas.
When the moon shines,
phantoms roam,
searching for lost memory.
Now callous prophets flounder
in shallow waters, invite us to
swallow their lucidity,
yet we keep hope alive,
diving into silver seas,
conjuring delicate radiances.
We whisper: Love magic and
all it promises; for though we are
lonely, still we will save you.
The acorn becomes the
tree you always knew you were,
and you have grown it.
