Observational, reflective and emotional, this collection of 20 poems is the latest addition to Steve Thorp’s growing body of work available in pamphlets, poetry boxes and online.

1. After-light
Words
Trickle down
From a darkening
Otherworld
After-light,
Misted and smudged,
Creeps in
This early,
Whispered
Birdsong has only
One meaning
A day conceived
In the glimmer of
A summer
Half-morning
Breathe:
That is the sign
Of your life
Then touch one
You love
And gift them
What they most desire

2. Love is a morning fire
Love is a morning fire fuelled
By Dylan’s words
A grey wind outside invites
Me to stay here with you and the promise
Of heaven in the logs I feed
I pause, share words with you,
Sit with gentle emotion
A flickered thought from the poet’s voice:
How can I write of love, of morning fires or
Evoke anything of weight?
Then a gospel layers in and I write of
Miracles, wondering if I love
(I search for the right word)
Appropriately, passionately,
Intuitively, honestly;
Honesty
With myself, with you, with God -
Who I imagine I see
Flickering in the morning fire,
Fluttering in the morning wind,
Shining in your eyes.
